1. What is Scandi Orthopedic?
Scandi Orthopedic develops and manufactures orthoses and prostheses for animals, mainly dogs and cats. The products are used to treat orthopaedic and neurological conditions, support rehabilitation and improve the quality of life of animals with reduced mobility.

3. How do I order an orthosis or prosthesis?
If you are a veterinarian or rehabilitation professional, you can order via our website or by contacting customer service. For individualized orthoses are needed:
Plaster cast or 3D scan
Referral form with diagnosis and motion analysis
Possibly video of the animal walking
4. Who can order?
Only licensed veterinarians, rehabilitation staff or clinic purchasing staff. Pet owners are advised to contact their treating clinic.
5. What is the difference between a prefabricated and a customized orthosis?
Prefabricated (Grade 1-3): standard sizes (XS-XL), fast delivery.
Customized (Grade 4): precise fit, better for complex conditions, can be fitted with joints and/or motion-limiting joints, well suited for conservative treatment for life.
6. What does Grade 1-4 mean for orthoses?
Grades 1-4 correlate with injury levels. For example, a Grade 1 injury may be mild hyperextension, or minor tendon damage. For these injuries, orthoses made of rigid materials such as hard plastic are not needed. Therefore, Grade 1 orthoses are usually made of neoprene, which is lightly supportive and compressive but still allows freedom of movement.
Grade 2 and Grade 3 orthoses work in the same way. The more severe the injury, the more supportive the orthosis needs to be. Grade 2 uses a proven stabilization system of Velcro straps, which allows some mobility but stabilizes the joint in the direction that the strap is attached. For smaller animals, such as cats and Chihuahuas, Grade 2 can in some cases provide adequate stabilization even for a severe injury.
Grade 2.5 and Grade 3 use thermoplastic as a stabilizer. When the thermoplastic is molded on the patient after heating in hot water, it becomes completely rigid. Grade 3 is therefore used after surgery and more severe injuries, often instead of plaster. As the thermoplastic only covers half of the leg, the orthosis can be easily removed to check the skin, which is difficult to do with plaster. In addition, the orthosis can be reshaped to gradually return to a normal loading angle. Finally, the thermoplastic can be removed from the orthosis and the neoprene part used as a Grade 1 orthosis at a later stage of rehabilitation.
Grade 4 orthoses are also made of hard plastic, but are manufactured after a 3D scan of the body part. These orthoses can be fully immobilizing or equipped with joints or motion limiters. Motion limiters mean that you can lock the joint completely, allow a certain range of motion, or open up the joint to free movement. Grade 4 orthoses are often used conservatively (instead of surgery, for life) or post-operatively.
7. How long is the delivery time?
Prefabricated orthoses (Grade 1-3): 1-3 working days
Custom-made orthoses (Grade 4): about 10-15 working days, after we receive the 3D scan and referral form
8. Can the products be used in rehabilitation?
Yes, orthoses are often combined with physiotherapy and hydrotherapy for optimal recovery.
9. How long should the orthosis be worn?
This is individual depending on the specific case. Sometimes temporary, sometimes for a longer period or for life. This is assessed by a veterinarian or physiotherapist.
10. Can the animal move with the orthosis?
Yes, often better than before. Introduction should be gradual, and with professional guidance.
11. Care of orthoses?
For most orthoses, hand wash at 30°C.
12. Can you adjust yourself?
No. Adjustment must be done by a vet or physiotherapist.
